First: Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and see if the external hard drive appears to be mounted (in my case this is a LaCie Rugged hard drive called "Work Back Up").
Note that when the external disc is mounted in Disk Utility it says "Unmount" in the top menu.
If this says "Mount", try clicking that to see if the disk appears on the desktop.
If this is greyed out, you may have a damaged disk.
If that is ticked and you still don't see your external hard drive, go to desktop > Finder > Go > Go To Folder
Now enter "/Volumes"
If your external hard drive appears in the Volumes folder, drag it to your Finder sidebar (it will just create an alias), where your other devices appear. My LaCie Rugged hard drive is called "Work Back Up". I simply select it and drag across to the top of the side bar window.
